Sankhu-Nagarkot-Changunarayan Tour
Two days Sankhu, Nagarkot and Changunarayan Village Tour is an excellent short tour on the outskirts of the Kathmandu Valley. If you have a day or two in Kathmandu and looking for an easy day hike then this is the best option to escape from the hustle and bustle of KTM city. You will be amazed to see just how much the local villages along the trail remain unchanged and still exhibit their traditional countryside daily lifestyle even though they are so close to Capital city.
The trip begins with an early morning pick and about 45 minutes drive to Sankhu old Newari Village. Our 3 hours hike starts at the Sankhu.We pass the uphill trail through scattered villages, forests and farmlands and reach Nagarkot early afternoon (2100 meters) and you will enjoy the evening sunset view from the Resort. Nagarkot is 2100 meters and it is a quiet and scenic hilltop about 32 km from KTM, very popular as a Mountain View point. One can see the panorama of the Himalayas ranging from the Mt. Dhaulagiri in the west to Kanchanjunga in the east including Mt Everest. The other ranges you will see are the Langtang, Dorje Lakpa and the Gaurishankar Himalayan ranges.
Our day two hiking trail from Nagarkot gradually descends through the terraced fields to the ‘Tamang Villages.’ The thatched houses, painted are built by with local stone hand-hewn by local craftsmen. These houses are normally 3 storied with a kitchen on the ground floor, a bedroom on the second and a store on the top. A courtyard in front has an adjoining shed for animals. The garden next to the house supplies all the household seasonal vegetables and fruit. Spring brings color to the village with young goat kids and other young animals as well as beautiful bright blossoms everywhere. The local wine making is pretty common throughout the year. The walking is easy with gradual downhill and fairly level paths. It will take about 4 hours to reach Changunarayan, the oldest Hindu temple in Nepal and one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and after lunch we drive back to KTM.
